Obtain passport applications and submit them at the Clerk of District Court's office located in the Law and Justice Center. Each person regardless of age must appear at the Clerk's office to apply for a passport. If the applicant is under 16 years old, both parents must come with the child to the office to sign the application. Call the office with requirements for special circumstances if a parent cannot sign in person. If the applicant is between 16 and 18, at least one parent must sign the application as well as the applicant. The document for
name change on valid passports is also available at the Clerk's office.
- Regular application used for applicants of all ages. Must be submitted through the Clerk of Court's office.
- Renewal application can be mailed by applicant directly to passport agency, but specific criteria must be met:
you can submit your most recent U.S. passport;
you were at least 16 years old when most recent passport was issued;
the most recent passport is less than 15 years old;
you use the same name or can submit proper documentation to reflect name change (court order or marriage license).
Information to submit along with application:
- 2 identical passport pictures - in Bozeman, these are available from AAA, CVS, Costco, Kinko's or Walmart.
- Certified copy of birth certificate - will have a raised or multi-color seal issued by the state. Birth certificates issued by a hospital with footprints are not acceptable.
- Current, official photo ID such as driver's license, passport, military or state ID - this document unlike the previous ones listed will not be sent with the application.
Cost:
Age 16 and over - $75 check or money order made payable to Passport Services plus $25 execution fee payable to the Clerk of District Court (cash or check).
Age 15 and younger - $60 check or money order made payable to Passport Services plus $25 execution fee payable to the Clerk of District Court (cash or check).
Expedite in 2 to 3 weeks - additional $60 to Passport Services.
If travel sooner than 2 weeks, in addition to the regular fee, expedite fee, and execution fee, a mail charge of $32.50 in two separate payments (of $16.25 each) is charged to overnight the application material to and from the passport agency. A copy of your travel itinerary must also be sent to prove travel within 14 days. This method usually ensures receipt of your passport in 1 week. Check www.travel.state.gov for the latest timelines.
Visa requirements:
Visas are not available from the Clerk of District Court's office. Tourist visas are available through travel agencies. Check www.travel.state.gov to get the latest travel information and to see about obtaining a visa. Also may wish to contact the consulate of the country you will visit for the latest travel requirements.
