Waste Disposal Programs
The goal of EHS Waste System Programs is to protect human health and the environment through safe waste disposal practices in Gallatin County. The programs are designed to achieve this through education, licensing, inspections, and a system for reporting and resolving problems.
Non-public Wastewater Treatment Systems
Registered Sanitarians from EHS are responsible for permitting, inspection of installation and review of operations of private wastewater treatment systems. EHS sanitarians review percolation test results, site evaluations and interpretations of soil conditions and their ability to absorb and treat septage. Lists of registered installers and site evaluators, as well as applicable forms for licensing may be obtained from EHS. Call 582-3120 for additional information.
Public Wastewater Treatment Systems
The MDEQ has primary responsibility for public wastewater treatment systems, which are defined as serving more than 24 persons for more than 60 days a year or having more than 14 connections. EHS and MDEQ each have permitting authority. EHS staff inspects pre-construction site conditions and make a post-inspection review of the installation. The MDEQ is responsible for operational review.
