The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office has teamed up with the Bozeman Police Department to to create a specialized team of experienced officers that can respond to crisis situations such as barricaded suspects, hostage situations, sniper situations, barricaded suicidal persons, or any other emergency that may require the activation of the Special Response Team.
Our team trains between 8 and 10 hours a month in preparation for such threats with the primary goal being to help save lives and protect the community. We are able to deploy marksmen observer teams, tactical entry teams, crisis negotiators, incident command units. With the help of a federal grant, we have recently added a tactical robot that can be deployed for unknown threats such as looking for, and determining the legitimacy of, explosive devices or searching for suspects without putting our personnel in greater danger.

In 2008 our team competed in the annual MSTOA team competition. We placed 2nd out of 16 regional teams. Over the last four years we have placed 1st twice and this is the second time we've placed 2nd. Last year we won the MSTOA competetition and were invited to attend the US National SWAT Championships in Douglas County Colorado. Three Sheriff's Deputies and three Bozeman Police Officers volunteered thier time to attend. We placed 6th out of 10 teams from all over the country. This year we again competed at Nationals and placed 16th (a tie with
Butte/Silver Bow) out of 30 teams. Many of which are full time teams from very large metropolitian areas including international teams. We had a good time and learned a lot. Congratulations to our team members!
