DEPUTY SHERIFF: The duties of a Deputy Sheriff involve the responsibility for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances within Gallatin County.  Deputies assist in or conduct the investigation of crimes, the apprehension of violators, and conduct routine patrol operations in accordance with standard Sheriff's Office operating procedures.  We are responsible for duties including general law enforcement, civil process service, and search and rescue command.   Opportunities for senior deputies are widely varied.

QULAIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:    Applicant must be a citizen of the United States at the time of application; be least 18 years of age and possess a GED or high school diploma at the time of testing.  An extensive background investigation and fingerprinting will be performed to disclose any criminal record or convictions; must be of good moral character; must pass a department physical ability and written examination; must complete an oral exam to demonstrate communications skills, temperament, motivation and other characteristics necessary to the accomplishments of the duties and functions of a peace officer; must possess or be eligible for a valid Montana driver’s license; pass a psychological test conducted and evaluated by a psychologist; must possess the ability to remain calm in stressful situations; make quick decisions using good judgment, understand and follow verbal and written orders; deal with all types of individuals and personalities.  

Hours for this position are varied.  Law Enforcement requires 24 hour a day coverage, 7 days a week.  Successful applicants may be asked to relocate as a resident deputy as directed by the Sheriff.  Go to the Canyon Patrol page to see more about being a resident deputy in Big Sky.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:   Possess a high school degree or GED.  Additional incentives available for higher education.  P.O.S.T. certified applicants welcome.  We will accept and consider non-P.O.S.T. certified applicants.

SALARY:                 $3,441.72/month + Excellent Benefit Package and Incentives.  20 year SRS retirement.

ADDITIONAL INCENTIVES:  2% increase for college degree.  $900/mo living allowance for resident deputies in Big Sky or West Yellowstone.
