HIB Vaccine Recall
Merck is recalling several lot numbers of Haemophilus b Congugate (HIB) vaccine that was distributed throughout the US, including Montana after April 2007. The HIB vaccine is part of the routine childhood immunization series. This is a precautionary volunteer recall due to possible contamination during the manufacturing process. However, sterility testing of the actual recalled vaccine has NOT found any contamination. In addition, no problems have been detected by the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) related to the HIB vaccine. Local health care providers have been informed of this recall.
Here is what parents need to know:
1. Children who received the recalled HIB vaccine DO NOT NEED TO BE REVACCINATED.
2. Potential reactions to the identified vaccine would most likely have occurred within one week after vaccination. Symptoms would be severe redness, swelling and tenderness at the injection site.
3. If your child experienced these symptoms after receiving the HIB vaccine, please contact the Gallatin City-County Health Department for further information.
For more information or questions please call Gallatin City-County Health Department at 582-3100.
